Why Instagram’s ‘Following’ Feed Won’t Be Making a Comeback

In a recent Q&A session, Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri addressed a question in many users’ minds: Will Instagram bring back the ‘Following’ feed? Unfortunately for those hoping for a simple chronological timeline, Mosseri confirmed that this option is unlikely to return. The reason? It doesn’t drive the kind of engagement Instagram needs to thrive.

Mosseri explained that while some users enjoy the simplicity of seeing posts in the order they were shared, the overall data tells a different story. Every time Instagram tests the feature, user engagement drops and satisfaction levels decline. According to Mosseri, users often forget they’re in the ‘Following’ feed, use the app less, and eventually report being less happy with Instagram altogether.

In 2016, the platform shifted from a chronological timeline to an algorithm-based feed, prioritizing posts based on user behavior.
