Instagram’s Threads continues to face turbulence as users report being unjustly censored or banned, prompting concerns about the platform’s content moderation system. Despite Meta’s efforts to challenge Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), the platform has struggled to address these growing moderation problems. From mistaken bans to flawed fact-checking, many users have raised the alarm about the way Threads handles content.
Content Blocking and User Frustration
Recent reports have highlighted how Instagram Threads is blocking users for trivial reasons, with some accounts even being removed due to errors in the moderation process.
Users like Jorge Caballero have shared stories about political content being incorrectly fact-checked, while other posts related to hurricane warnings were also taken down. Even humor is not immune, with one user locked out of her account for joking about the heatwave.
This is not the first time Meta has been criticized for moderation issues. Experts have noted similar challenges on Facebook and Instagram in the past, where automated systems wrongly flagged posts or comments.
According to social media expert Matt Navarra, the situation with Threads is particularly concerning because even factual content is being blocked. Navarra himself experienced account downranking after posting about a harmless story, further underscoring the platform’s flawed moderation system.
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, acknowledged the moderation failures, stating that the platform’s reviewers were often making decisions without proper context. However, many users feel that Threads’ issues run deeper and that Meta’s response may be too little, too late.
